| Resumen del trabajo | The existing insufficient knowledge in the mastery of the English language on our healthcare workers still stands as one of the main problems in order to achieve a proper communicative competence. As a result of new agreements for collaboration with English-speaking countries, a growing need for training our Health Professionals in English has become a priority for Cuban Health Ministry and authorities. Besides, a great effort and an arduous work have been carried out by the English teachers who teach English in Medical Universities either in undergraduate or postgraduate. Class observations including English language elective courses, the application of proficiency tests, interviews and surveys have made the authors of this paper realized the persistent feebleness in terms of professional communicative competence on the part of the health professionals. An exhaustive and careful revision of the syllabuses of the medical subjects which are included in the medical students’ curriculum was made. The opinions and suggestions of the Head Teachers of the different medical subjects was also taken into account Supporting teaching materials have been elaborated by the researchers. Examples of General Comprehensive Medicine, Morpho-Physiology, Semiology and Orthopedics have been provided on this occasion in four different pamphlets with a Manual of Use which explains briefly and clearly in a practical manner how to use them without the help of an expert. It collects medical terms with figurative phonetic transcriptions, short definitions and illustrations whenever possible, so that the learner can make his own rules and assess his progress. |
